Dates and Numbers

Activity type: this is a dictation activity in which students have to recognize how to express numbers and dates.

Level: Beginner students and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Begin this activity by reading out the following numbers. Tell the students to write them down as figures:

    • 101
    • 100,000
    • 24
    • 57
    • 28
    • 24
    • 1,550
    • 74
    • 42
    • 6
    • 2,000,000
    • 2, 001
    • 2,000,000,000
    • 16

  2. Go over the answers and now read these out and ask the students to write them down:

      • Money:

        • $400
        • 50 cents
        • $9.99
        • 1000 Yen
        • 20 pounds

      • Phone numbers:

        • 011 212 437 0003
        • 1 800 342 9777
        • 001 44 834 9907
        • 347 7241

      • Dates:

        • 1987
        • 05/26/2005
        • 2021
        • 03/28/1968
        • 09/25/1978
        • 12/02/2004
        • 09/24/1994
        • 02/20/2004
        • 2nd of February
        • 29th of March
        • First of June
        • Third of April

          (Note that the US format of writing dates is Month/Day/Year, eg: 03/31/1981)

      • Decimals and percentages:

        • 25%
          10%
          10.9
          2.8
          16%

      • Temperatures:

        • 78 degrees Fahrenheit 25 degrees Celsius 12 degrees centigrade

          (You may want to discuss which countries use which system for measuring the temperature.)

      • Fractions

        • A quarter
          a half
          three quarters
          two and six eighths
          a third
          a sixteenth

  3. Ask the students to check what they have written down with their partners.
  4. Repeat if necessary and then write the answers on the board.
  5. Ask the students to then think of their:

      1. favorite number
      2. favorite date
      3. favorite national holiday
      4. temperature that they like to live in
      5. salary that they would like to earn!

  6. Tell the students to tell their partners what the above are
  7. Tell them to read the dates and numbers out; their partners should not look at what they have written but write down what they say i.e. a paired dictation
  8. Once each pair has done this, ask the group to tell each other why the above dates and numbers are their favorites.
