Activity type: this is a game in which students have to tell lies and truths and decide who is telling what.
Level: Pre-intermediate and above
Teacher's notes:
- Tell the students that you are going to tell them three statements about yourself. One will be false but the other ones will be true. What they have to do is to guess which the false statement is.
- Divide the class into two teams and tell them that they will score one point if they decide on the false statement correctly. They will take it in turns to guess.
- Say three statements to one of the teams e.g.
I lived in Africa.
I speak French.
I come from England.
- The students from that team should be able to guess which is false using the information that they know about the teacher. For example, “Yes, it’s obvious you are British and I think you mentioned Africa so – no the teacher cannot speak French!”
- If the students are correct, score one point for that team.
- If they do not know, pass the turn over to the other team. If they guess correctly, then they score a point.
- Once you have done this, do the same but to the other team. Note: do not allow the other team who is not being asked to shout out the answer.
- Tell the students to each think of three statements about themselves. One false and the others true. Take it in turns for one team member to say his/her statements to the other team. That team should try to see if they can guess which is false. Note that the statement should not be too outlandish because otherwise it will be too obvious and the other team will scores points easily.
- Make sure that each team member says his/her statements to the other team.
- At the end, count up the scores. The team with the most wins.
Alternatively tell the team members to think of two false statements and one true. The teams would then have to guess which the true statement was.
