Hide things around the room

Activity type: this is a game based around ‘hide and seek’ in which the students have to find things around the classroom.

Level: Elementary and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Begin this activity by pre-teaching the words: WARMER, COOLER, COLD and HOT.
  2. You can demonstrate the meaning of these words by fanning yourself because it is very hot or wrapping your arms around yourself because it is so cold etc.
  3. Explain that you are going to hide things around the room; the students have to find the things that you hide. Begin by telling/showing the students what you are going to hide.
  4. Tell one student to stand outside. Hide the thing in the room.
  5. Tell the student to come back into class. Tell him/her to find the thing by taking clues from the other students i.e. when the student is near the object, the students will say ‘HOTTER.’ If the student is a long way away from the object, the students will shout, ‘COLD!’ If the student is near the object and then moves away from it, the students will shout ‘COLDER!’ If the student moves towards the object, the students will shout ‘HOTTER’ until the student is very near and then they will shout ‘HOT!’
  6. When the student has practically found the thing the students will say, ‘HOT!’
  7. The student should then pick the thing up to make it known he/she has found the object.
  8. Repeat the activity by telling another student to leave the room. Hide the object with the help of the other students.
  9. Tell the student to come back in and tell him to find the object.

As a variation you can tell two students to leave the room. Tell them to find the object as quickly as they can, racing against one another. Note that this is a very noisy game!.
