Rhyming tennis

Activity type: : this is a game in which students have to say words that rhyme to one another.

Level: : elementary and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. You can either divide the group up into two teams or put the students into pairs; this will depend on how you want to run the activity/game.
  2. Tell the students that they are going to play a type of word tennis which means that they are going to say words to each other. Either two teams can do this or the students can work in pairs as in a singles tennis game.
  3. Explain that you are going to start them off with a word; the teams than have to think of words which rhyme with that word and keep taking it in turns to ‘hit’ the words to one another.
  4. Tell them that they have to keep the volley going for as long as possible without repeating any words. The first group to stop i.e. not able to think of a rhyming word lose and a point will be given to the other team. You can score points as they are in a game of tennis or you can simply score one point for each team that can keep the words coming for as long as possible.
  5. As soon as you have awarded a point, give the students another word. Continue for as long as you want.

Example

Try, sky, my, buy, lie, tie, why, high, fly, dye, sigh, guy, pie, shy etc…
