Sounds for the third person 's'


Activity type: this is a sounds discrimination activity in which students have to listen to the various endings of conjugated verbs.

Level: Elementary and above


Teacher's notes:

  1. Ask the students to repeat these verbs after you:

    • He walks to work. /s/
    • She plays tennis. /z/
    • He teaches the students. /iz/

  2. Ask the students to listen carefully to you again and to decide what sound the‘s’ is making.
  3. Elicit the /s/ sound the /iz/ sound and the /z/ sound from the students i.e. the three endings for the third person ‘s.’
  4. Then write the said phonemes onto the board.
  5. Tell the students that you are going to hear other verbs with the third person ‘s’ ending and what they have to do is write the verb under the correct phoneme.
