New York, New York

Type of activity: this is a quiz in which students have to research the Internet to find out answers to questions about New York.

Level: Intermediate and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Bring a map in to class of the New York area.

  2. Show the students where it is exactly; ask them a few questions about the city. Ask the students whether they have been to New York or not.

  3. If you have postcards/pictures, show them some in the lesson. Tell them to think about what it looks like and to describe it to you. Elicit words such as sky scraper, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc.

  4. Arrange the students around the computers in your media centre. Two students, if possible, per computer.

  5. Hand out the quiz below; one per pair of students. Ask them to answer the questions below as quickly as possible. They can do this by researching the answers on the Internet.

  6. Ask them to do this as quickly as possible. Go over the answers.

  7. Note that the above can be done as a homework assignment if your students have access to a computer.

  8. Ask the students to plan a trip in pairs to New York. They can look at the Internet and plan where they would like to go etc.

  9. As a follow-up you can ask the students to write their own questions about their home town. They can do this for homework or they can do it using the Internet in class. This may mean that they read in their first language which is fine so long as they speak in English as they are doing the activity and write out their questions in English.

  10. At the end of the activity collect in the questions; correct them ready for the next class.

  11. In the next class, divide the students in to two teams and hold a class quiz. Ask the students the questions that they have written. It does not matter that the students are asked their questions; it is simply a fun quiz.

  12. Alternatively you could ask the students to write their names on the questions that they wrote and then sort out the questions and teams so that the students are not asked questions that they wrote.
