Sound effects

Type of activity: this is a fun reading activity in which the students make sound effects to stories that the teacher is reading

Level: Intermediate and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Choose any story that you would like to read out to the students.
  2. Designate half the group the sound effects group and the other half the verb action group.
  3. Tell the sound effects group that whenever you say a sound word e.g. a clap, a shout, a meow they have to make that noise.
  4. Practice with them; say some sounds and make sure that they all make them back to you. Keep practicing until they are really good at doing this.
  5. Then tell the verb group people that they are going to mime whatever action you say. For example if you say run, they should mime running, if you say walk, they should mime walking etc.
  6. Practice with them so that they know what to do.
  7. Read the short story to the group and make sure that they make noises/act out what they should.

The aim of the above activity is to practice students' listening skills and to have fun when reading. It is ideal for younger learners.
