Developing fluency

Level: Pre-intermediate and above
Time: 40 minutes

Teacher's notes:

  1. Give each student s a piece of paper and ask them to write one polemical statement on the paper e.g. Women will rule the world very soon.
  2. It doesn't have to be a statement that the students believe, simply something which will generate a conversation/a reaction in the other students.
  3. Tell the students not to write their names on the pieces of paper, they should remain anonymous.
  4. Put the students into groups of three.
  5. Collect in each strip.
  6. Tell the students that you are now going to read out each strip one at a time.
  7. Once you have read out a statement, ask the students to discuss it.
  8. Let the discussion run its course and then go over a few of the discussion points.
  9. Move onto the next statement.
  10. At the end go over the students' errors and correct.
