If the picture fits…
by Cassandra Cretney

Type of activity: This is a speaking activity in which students guess other students' drawings.

Level: Any (instructions can be adapted for any level but activity works best with pre-intermediates and up).

Teacher's notes:

  1. Begin by drawing something on the board and asking the students to guess what it is. Encourage them to ask questions e.g. is it a ….? Is it something I can eat etc. Once the students have guessed what the picture is, hand out, on slips of paper, a drawing instruction to each student. Examples are given below. Make sure that each student has a different instruction and ensure that they do not show each other their instructions.

  2. Instruct the students to draw what the instruction tells them to. Remind them not to show each other what they are drawing.

  3. Put the students into pairs and ask them to show each other their completed drawings. Each student guesses what the other student has drawn.

  4. If time teacher could pin up all the drawings around the classroom so that the students can get up and see everyone’s drawing and then get each student to give a brief summary of what they have drawn and why.

Note: Students will probably try to spend a long time drawing. Set a strict time limit and go round encouraging the students. Make it clear that it is drawing ability is not important speaking English is the aim.
