Type of activity: This is a speaking activity in which students guess other students' drawings.
Level: Any (instructions can be adapted for any level but activity works best with pre-intermediates and up).
Teacher's notes:
- Begin by drawing something on the board and asking the students to guess what it is. Encourage them to ask questions e.g. is it a ….? Is it something I can eat etc. Once the students have guessed what the picture is, hand out, on slips of paper, a drawing instruction to each student. Examples are given below. Make sure that each student has a different instruction and ensure that they do not show each other their instructions.
- Instruct the students to draw what the instruction tells them to. Remind them not to show each other what they are drawing.
- Put the students into pairs and ask them to show each other their completed drawings. Each student guesses what the other student has drawn.
- If time teacher could pin up all the drawings around the classroom so that the students can get up and see everyone’s drawing and then get each student to give a brief summary of what they have drawn and why.
Note: Students will probably try to spend a long time drawing. Set a strict time limit and go round encouraging the students. Make it clear that it is drawing ability is not important speaking English is the aim.
