Swivel Chairs

Activity type: this is a speaking activity (fluency) in which students regularly change partners.

Note: the questions that have been written below practice the use of the superlative. You could focus the questions on any grammar structures that you have taught or on open fluency questions.

Level: All levels

Teacher's notes:

  1. Arrange the chairs in the class so that they are in small circles. If you have a small class, you can place the chairs into one large circle. Note that you can do this before the students get into class.
  2. Tell the students to sit down.
  3. Begin by putting the students into pairs.
  4. Tell them that you are going to give them a question to discuss. They should discuss that question with their partners until you tell them to stop.
  5. Once you have told them to stop, they must swivel/turn in their chairs. This will mean that they are facing a new partner i.e. either on their right or left. Note that you do not want the students to stand up and turn; they need only to move in their chairs.
  6. Give them another question to discuss with their new partners. Once you have told them to stop, they should then turn back/swivel again. This will mean that they will be facing their original partners.
  7. Give them another question to discuss.
  8. Repeat this procedure until you have covered all the questions that you want to.

Note: you may want to do this as a warmer or at the end of a class. If moving chairs is difficult, ask the students to sit on the floor in circles.

Possible questions to discuss:

  1. What was the nicest thing that somebody said to you yesterday?
  2. What was the prettiest thing that you saw yesterday?
  3. What was the most interesting thing that you read yesterday?
  4. What was the funniest thing you saw over the weekend?
  5. What was the most boring thing that you did over the weekend?
  6. What was the best thing that somebody said to you last week?
  7. Where is the most beautiful place that you have visited?
  8. Who is the smartest person that you know?
  9. Who is the sweetest person that you know?
  10. What was the best thing that you watched on TV last week?
