Verbs which go with the body

Activity type: this is a vocabulary matching activity in which students learn verbs which go with the parts of the body.

Level: Low-intermediate and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Tell the students that they are going to play ‘Simon says’ i.e. the students touch certain the parts of their bodies, if you say “Simon says.” For example, if you said, “Simon says touch your head.” The students should touch their heads. If you do not say “Simon says” then they should not touch that part of their bodies. If they do they are out. The last person remaining wins. Look under younger learners for a full set of instructions on this.
  2. Once they have played this for a while, review all of the body parts. Deal with any pronunciation problems as you say the words.
  3. Then tell the students that they are going to match useful verbs with the parts of the body that they are connected to.
  4. Dictate these words; spell them out if the students cannot approximate the spelling.

    1. BLOW
    2. SHAKE
    3. COMB
    4. BEND
    5. BITE
    6. FOLD
    7. POINT
    8. SHRUG
    9. NOD
    10. LICK
    11. RAISE
    12. CROSS

  5. Tell the students to work in pairs matching the part of the body that does the action.
  6. Go over the answers with the students. Then tell them to fit the new verbs that they have into the gap-fill below. Tell them to work in pairs to do this.
