Key word story

Activity type: this is a creative writing story with prompts i.e. ‘key words’ that the students must use in their stories.

Level: Intermediate and above although this can be graded down if the ‘key words’ are simpler then the ones listed. This is fun for teenage learners.

Teacher's notes:
  1. Dictate the words listed below to the students. Explain that they are going to write a story but that they must use the words that you have dictated and in the order that you dictated them in.
  2. Put the students into groups of threes. Allow them time to check that they understand the meanings of the words and also some time to brainstorm a few ideas.
  3. Appoint a scribe in each group. Ask that person to write down the story. Give the students a time limit and then tell them to try to join the words together in a story.
  4. Once they have finished, tell each group to nominate one student to move to the group next to them. Once the students have moved, tell the students to listen to the stories that the new member of their group wrote.
  5. Listen and then ask for each group to tell the whole class their stories if you have time.

NOTE: you can change the word lists to suit your students. You could add a few students’ names or you could add a famous person’s name. This adds a little more fun.
