Quick word spell

Activity type: this is a game in which students have to review their vocabulary and spelling

Level: Beginner and above

Teacher's notes:

  1. Divide the class into two teams.
  2. Explain that one team shouts out a letter and the other team has to say a word that begins with this letter. For example if one team says ‘p,’ the other team could say ‘people.’
  3. If the team can’t think of a word, a point is scored to the team that shouted out the letter. Note that words cannot be repeated. If one team says ‘people,’ it cannot be said again.
  4. Tell each team to take it in turns. Make sure that speed is an important part of this game.
  5. Keep the teams moving quickly. Score one point for each word said.
  6. Once they have done this for a while, make it a little harder by telling the teams to shout out the first two letters of a word. For example, a team could shout out ‘ph’, the answer could then be ‘phantom.’
  7. The teams can confer about the letters but make sure that they do this quickly. If you like, you could score points against a team if they take too long to think of something.
  8. If they do this well, you could then tell the teams to think of letters which words end in. For example, if a team says p, the other team has to say a word which ends with this letter such as tulip.
