Quick word spell
Activity type: this is a game in which students have to review their vocabulary and spelling
Level: Beginner and above
Teacher's notes:
- Divide the class into two teams.
- Explain that one team shouts out a letter and the other team has to say a word that begins with this letter. For example if one team says ‘p,’ the other team could say ‘people.’
- If the team can’t think of a word, a point is scored to the team that shouted out the letter. Note that words cannot be repeated. If one team says ‘people,’ it cannot be said again.
- Tell each team to take it in turns. Make sure that speed is an important part of this game.
- Keep the teams moving quickly. Score one point for each word said.
- Once they have done this for a while, make it a little harder by telling the teams to shout out the first two letters of a word. For example, a team could shout out ‘ph’, the answer could then be ‘phantom.’
- The teams can confer about the letters but make sure that they do this quickly. If you like, you could score points against a team if they take too long to think of something.
- If they do this well, you could then tell the teams to think of letters which words end in. For example, if a team says p, the other team has to say a word which ends with this letter such as tulip.
